Description:

WILLIAM PITT (THE YOUNGER)
(1759 - 1806) British Prime Minister who reduced the national debt, brought forward progressive fiscal policies, and waged a successful war against Napoleon's France. Fine association L.S. "W. Pitt" 1p. 4to., "Downing Street" [Westminster], Dec. 31, 1805 to an unnamed recipient: "As the Meeting of Parliament is fixed for Tuesday the 21st of January and as Business of the utmost importance will, as speedily as possible, be brought under the consideration of Parliament, I am persuaded I shall be excused for expressing my earnest and anxious wish to see the fullest and most respectable Attendance at the very beginning of the Session". Pitt's Second Ministry presided over a weak majority in Parliament, thus attendance by his loyal back-benchers was critical to passage of any act. Tragically, two days following the opening of Parliament on January 21, 1805, he died from liver disease. Usual folds, light foxing and soiling, else very good condition.
