Description:

WILLIAM PEPPERRELL
(1696 - 1759) American general who commanded forces against the French at Cape Breton and in the French and Indian war. He was also the first American ever knighted. Scarce partly-printed D.S. signed "William Pepperrell" twice in the body of the document, 1p., oblong 8vo. York, Nov. 29, 1754, with an extensive portion of document penned by Pepperrell. Writing as Massachusetts Chief Justice of the Court of Common Pleas, he issues a Writ of Attachment in the name of King George II, directing the Sheriff of Essex to arrest Edmund Quincy and to confiscate his estate for non-payment of a debt to "Sir William Pepperrell of Kittery [Maine] in our S[ai]d County of York Baronet the first Justice named in the Commission for holding Said Court…". Pepperrell's full name appears twice in the holograph body of the document and his signature "Pepperrell" is additionally penned on verso. Usual toning, very good.
