WILLIAM PHILLIPS
(1731? - 1781) British general and artillery officer who served as second in command to John Burgoyne, served as commander of the Convention Army when Burgoyne was paroled and was noted for his tremendous arrogance. Rare war-date D.S. "W. Phillips Major General", with place and date in his hand, Cambridge, June 19, 1778, 14 1/2" x 6 3/4", an account written on behalf of Gen. William Heath setting forth a shortage of funds provided by the British Government to Heath to be used to purchase provisions, presumably for soldiers then encamped in Boston. A few lightly foxed areas, else very good.
