Description:

(1733 - 1796) Ulster-born brigadier general in the Continental Army. Maxwell first served in Braddock's disastrous expedition in the French and Indian War. In the Revolutionary War, he fought at Trois-Rivières, then after promotion to brigadier general, he returned to New Jersey to join Washington's army after its retreat across New Jersey following the loss of New York. He fought at Germantown and Monmouth, then led Sullivan's forces in the north for some time. Fine association war-dale A.L.S., 1p. 4to., [n.p., likely New Jersey, 1778], to Lord Sterling. In part: 'My Lord I received yours last night...with the Orders of the day. I will not loose no time to complete every thing you require it will be the most difficult to find out matters on Staten Island we have sent off to New York. I saw a party of near 100 of Skinner's men parade on Statten Island last night not far from the Point. I will leave Col. Dayton to take the command and I think I will go up to meet and Col. Dayton is well calculated for this Post, we see no more of their small Vessels...a good many cannons hear at N. York or a little higher it may be Platoons exercising...' Small paper label at bottom, easily soaked off, else very good. Cortlandt Skinner (1727-1799) was the last Royal Attorney General of New Jersey and a brigadier general in a Loyalist force, the New Jersey Volunteers, also known as Skinner's Greens, during the Revolutionary War. Throughout the war, the New Jersey Volunteers mercilessly harassed their Patriot opponents in the Province of New York, from the defensive outposts of Long Island to Staten Island. Skinner was also the leading civil and military authority over Staten Island.
