Description:

(1711-1777) American major general who served in the French and Indian war as well as the American Revolution. Died of wounds sustained at the Battle of Ridgefield. Very rare, fine content war date A.L.S. 1p. 4to., 'camp near New York', July 10, 1775, to Capt. David Dimon regarding the transport of an important British prisoner. In part: '...In pursuant to orders from the Continental Congress you are directed with the guard under your command to receive Gov. Skene and safely convey and deliver to the Committee of Correspondence at Wethersfield, you will take care that he is treated with that politeness and civility that is due to a gentleman of his rank...' The bottom of the page bears an unsigned endorsement verifying the delivery of the prisoner. Minor tear at a crease has been repaired on the verso with tape, minor ink spotting. Phillip Skene (1725-1810) was an officer in the British army during the Revolution. Prior to the war Skene was involved in negotiations with England to form the new colony of New Hampshire of which he would have been governor, but the plan was interrupted by the outbreak of the war. Upon his return from England, Skene was captured by Continental forces and held prisoner for loyalist ties until he was exchanged a year later.
