WILLIAM M. "BOSS" TWEED(1823 -1878) Mayor of New York and political boss. His construction of the New York Court House and the graft associated with it nearly bankrupted New York and led to his ultimate jailing. Very rare oversize S.P. "Wm. M. Tweed New York" as Representative of the 4th Senatorial District of New York, 8" x 10 1/2" overall with an ornate border, a chest, up pose of Tweed nicely signed on the lower mount. The photo is bound within a book Photographic Senatorial Album of the State of New York 1872-73, published by R.E. Churchill, Albany, with leather covers with gilt printing, this copy once owned by one "T. I. Chatfield". Similar portrait photographs within are signed by Gov. JOHN HOFFMAN, Lt. Gov. ALLEN C. BEACH, and every other State Senator save one. Edges of spine worn, else very good condition. While Tweed's documents are common, signed photographs, especially of this size, are exceedingly rare.
