Lot 1708
CLARA BARTON(1821 - 1912) American nurse who tended the wounded in the Civil War and later founded the American Red Cross. A.L.S 4pp. 8vo., Glen Echo, Jan. 29, 1905 to Mr. Wells. In part: "...My heart fills with grateful appreciation for the honor you have done me. To be Chairman of the 'Academy Board'...is not merely an honor but a gladness of heart...Let me give one word of caution. I may, after all, do you harm. It was I who once broke your same work. It was for me the Press turned on you a year and a half ago. It may do it again!...if this does occur, and you see again that the Jonah is on board, throw him over board. Don't hesitate to drop me off at once, if you even mistrust that I may draw a fire on your snug fort...This is a most confidential scrap...". Staple holes in margin, else very good.
