Description:

WILLIAM F. BARTLETT
(1840 - 1876) Union brigadier general who successively commanded two regiments, a brigade and a division. Over the course of the war, he was wounded four times. Despite losing a leg, he was heavily engaged with his 57th Mass. at the Wilderness and the Crater where his prosthetic leg was shot away and he was captured. Rare, good association A.E.S. ‘W. F. Bartlett' on a letter, 1p. 4to., [n.p.], June 30, 1865, from a Lt. George E. Priest of the 57th Massachusetts Infantry, to a Capt. A. W. Cooke, requesting passes for himself, his wagon master, and his forage master. On the verso, the request is endorsed as approved by NAPOLEON B. MACLAUGHLEN (1823-1887), Union brevet brigadier general who fought at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Spotsylvania and Gettysburg, and was captured at Fort Stedman and sent to Libby Prison. He signs ‘N. B. McLaughlen' in black ink. Below, Bartlett pens his endorsement ‘Approved' and signs in black ink, with another hand adding the date ‘July 3d 1865' and his rank. The request is finally endorsed and returned with passes enclosed by a provost marshal. Shows original mailing folds, with archival tape residue and a pencil identifying inscription on the verso, otherwise in very good to fine condition.
