WILLIAM F. BARRY
(1818 - 1879) Union brigadier general who served as Chief of Artillery for McDowell and was with Sherman on the March to the Sea. Good association, war-date A.L.S., 1p, 4to., Washington, D.C., Aug. 5, 1863, to fellow officer and New York adjutant general John T. Sprague. Barry writes on his ‘Headquarters Inspector of Artillery' letterhead to recommend an officer for promotion, in full: ‘I have just been informed that Col. Hall's resignation has been accepted. The vacancy in the 4th N.Y. Artillery of which I spoke in my letter of yesterday having thus occurred, I earnestly hope you may secure the appointment of Capt. Tidhall. I am just authorized by Lt Col. Alcock & Major Sears, the two senior officers of the Regt, to say that the appointment of Capt. Tidhall will be perfectly acceptable to them.' He signs boldly at the conclusion in black ink. Shows original mailing folds, with archival tape mounting remnants to the verso, otherwise in fine condition. Sold with a period frontispiece engraving of Barry.
