Description:

WILLIAM D. WHIPPLE
(1826 - 1902) Union brigadier general and Chief of Staff of George H. Thomas at Chattanooga and Atlanta. Fine content war-date A.L.S. as Brigadier General on Head Quarters, Department of the Cumberland letterhead, 2pp., oblong 4to., "Steamer Tarascon, Tennessee River," January 11, 1865, a moving and patriotic letter of thanks to C.L. Pascal of Philadelphia. In part: "Your note of the first instance which does me such honor has been received; for it please accept my thanks. Having been reared with a profound love and reverence for our country and her institutions, increased by an education to the profession of arms bestowed upon me by herself, it has ever been a labor of love as well as a solemn duty to render to her my best, most earnest and untiring services. If those services have in any way contributed to the successful prosecution of this war against treason to her, I am more than repaid by having my name held in remembrance by my fellow citizens..." Boldly signed, "William D. Whipple, Brig Gen & Chief of Staff." Archivally repaired at center fold with a small tear at bottom right corner, none affecting signature, else fine. Whipple wrote the letter only a month after General Thomas won the Battle of Nashville; the confident prose is probably in response to that action.
