Description:

JOHN E. WOOL
(1784 - 1869) Union major general who fought off the Confederates at Fort Monroe and occupied Norfolk. Fine content war-date A.L.S., 1p., 8vo., Washington, March 11, 1864, to a Mrs. Foster regarding efforts for the Sanitary Commission. In part: "...If I would I could not refuse your request, it being for the Sanitary Commission, whose beneficent, human and patriotic efforts is worthy of all praise, having for object the restoration of the sick and to heal the wounds of those who offered their lives as sacrifice for their country..." Wool's letter, written a day after the Louisiana Red River campaign began, shows the importance of the Sanitary Commission to the war effort. The Commission, begun by Lincoln in 1861 as a way for women to aid Union troops by raising funds, supplies, and providing medical care, maintained operations until 1866. Slight soiling at top left corner from former paper clip, else fine.
