Bainbridge", 3pp, 4to., London, July 24, 1806, to William Jones in Philadelphia, in part: "...I arrived in this city from Liverpool...the following day I witnessed the different persons distinguished for making the best timepieces. I found Arnolds price for his best eight day chronometer to be 100 Guineas, he has lately received a large premium from the British Government - which would generally be considered as a high recommendation to his timepieces...I did not see at Arnolds, but a very few Chronometers belonging to the East India ships...". Bainbridge goes on to state that he has purchased several chronometers and two artificial horizons (a device for determining distance on land) which he promises to send by the first safe conveyance.
