Description:

WILLIAM BAINBRIDGE
(1744 - 1833) American naval officer captured at Tripoli, later commanded the Constitution in her victory over the Java. A.L.S. "Wm. Bainbridge", 1p. folio, Princeton, Feb. 14, 1807, to William Jones in Philadelphia, in part: "As you were so obliging as to say that you would endeavor to sell my chronometer for me I will thank you to offer it to those gentlemen whom you suppose might purchase, and let me hear the result...I received a letter from Washington saying 'if your Chronometer is not too high we will take it' but I would prefer disposing of it in Philadelphia for fear of its receiving some injury in the transportation to Washington...". With the attached integral address leaf. Letters from Bainbridge, particularly later in his career, sometimes appear in the marketplace, but those documenting his brief merchant career are quite unusual. Chipped at the top affecting the date, fold splits, else very good.
