Description:

WILLIAM BAINBRIDGE
(1744 - 1833) American naval officer captured at Tripoli, later commanded the Constitution in her victory over the Java. A.L.S. "Wm. Bainbridge", 2pp. folio, Newark, Feb. 1811, to William Jones in Philadelphia, in part: "...I am on my way to Philadelphia where I expect to arrive tomorrow. Was detained several days in New York in expectation of getting the freight from Mr. Abram...who has acted like a mean unprincipled fellow. Yesterday I put your letter me respecting the freight in the hands of Mr. Robinson whom I expect has written to you on the subject...". With the attached integral address leaf. Written while Bainbridge was sailing the merchant ship Lion to and from St. Petersburg. Letters from Bainbridge, particularly later in his career, sometimes appear in the marketplace, but those documenting his brief merchant career are quite unusual. Chipped at the top and right side with loss of a few words of text, fold splits, else about good.
