Description:

WILHELM FRICK
(1877 - 1946) Nazi Minister of the Interior, author of the Nuremberg Laws. Hanged at Nuremberg for his crimes. A.L.S. as prisoner on trial at Nuremberg, 'Cell 28', 1p. 4to., Oct. 30, 1945, in German to Major Airey Neave serving the General Secretary of the International Military Tribunal, three weeks before his trial would begin. In full: 'I would like to speak to you about my defense.' Near fine. A war hero and fluent in German, it was accorded Neave the honor of reading to the defendants each of their indictments eleven days earlier. Mounted to heavy stock, with the verso bearing an unrelated T.L.S. of BALDUR VON SCHIRACH (1907-1974), the Nazi leader of the Hitler Youth and Gauleiter of Vienna, who would be sentenced at Nuremberg to twenty years for war crimes. The 1p. 4to. letter is dated June 3,1946 while Schirach was under trial at Nuremberg and is addressed to the Tribunal's General Secretary. In his hastily-signed letter, von Schirach appoints a Dr. Nelte to represent him while his chief counsel, while his chief defender, Dr. Felix Sauter, is away. This document originates from the files of Hans Werner, Director of Printing for the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg. It was his task to publish the 42-volume record of the trial using this document and scores of others. Following completion of his task, Werner was permitted to retain possession of the documents, which were never tagged as evidence. They were then sold by autograph expert Charles Hamilton in his auctions, in 1979.
