Description:

WILHELM FRICK
(1877 - 1946) Nazi Minister of the Interior, author of the Nuremberg Laws. Hanged at Nuremberg for his crimes. Fine content partly-printed D.S. 'Frick' in indelible pencil, 1p. legal folio, Nuremberg, Jan. 18, 1946, a submission to the International Military Tribunal of a 'Defendant's Application for Summons for Witness' to be called in Frick's defense. Frick asks that 'George Messerschmidt' in Washington [actually George S. Messersmith (1883-1960)], be summoned to testify concerning an affidavit he had made on Aug. 30, 1945: '...in which he repeated an alleged statement of Frick which is of vital importance to the Prosecution...the witness will not be able to support this statement...' Mounted, and sold with the official Nuremberg Tribunal translation, also mounted. Very good. GEORGE S. MESSERSCHMIDT (1883-1960) served as head of the US Consulate in Germany from 1930 to 1934. In his deposition submitted to the Tribunal, he testified several times about the openness of his discussions with Nazi leaders: '...the Nazi Government officials, almost without exception from the highest to the lowest with whom I had contact, were on most occasions amazingly frank in their conversation and without any concealment of their aims...' Frick no doubt believed that his 'honesty' with Messersmith (whose name he didn't even recall correctly!) would mitigate the charges against him. This document originates from the files of Hans Werner, Director of Printing for the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg. It was his task to publish the 42-volume record of the trial using this document and scores of others. Following completion of his task, Werner was permitted to retain possession of the documents, which were never tagged as evidence. They were then sold by autograph expert Charles Hamilton in his auctions, in 1979.
