Description:

WHERE SITTING BULL PRAYED THE NIGHT BEFORE HIS MURDER
Extremely scarce and historically important D.F. Barry photograph associated with the murder of Sitting Bull, 8" x 10" with Barry imprint, the verso also carrying Barry's backmark and his studio addresses in Bismarck and Standing Rock, D.T. (Dakota Territory). The famous western photographer of Native Americans has marked an "X" on the photograph to indicate the place where Sitting Bull prayed by the Grand River on the evening of Dec. 14, 1890, the night before he was suspiciously murdered by Indian police. On the verso, he boldly writes in pencil: "Hill at Grand River where Sitting Bull went to pray to the Great Spirit - When he returned to his home he told his family he would be killed the next morning - 14 Dec 1890. D.F. Barry". Edge and corner rubs with a small, minor stain, otherwise very good. A superb western relic, with an excessively rare photographer's signature!
