Incredible A.D.S., 1p. oblong 8vo., May 30, 1865 to James Hervey Witherspoon at Lancaster Court House, SC. Trustee R. E. Allison writes to Witherspoon (1810-1865), who was a Confederate Congressman, county commissioner, and colonel of the 4th South Carolina. Allison reports: "The Negroes have been emancipated by the military authorities of the United States as a consequence of the war of rebellion of the South and the Trustee submits he is no longer chargeable with them. He begs leave, however, to not that the boy Henry is dead and is reported to have been killed by Gen. [Joseph] Wheeler's cavalry for plotting against the life of his mistress, Mrs. Williams and family..." Fine, with transmittal envelope.
