Description:

9TH PENNSYLVANIA CAVALRY CHARGES INTO LAFAYETTE, GEORGIA
Excellent content A.L.S., 2pp. 4to., Whiteville, Tennessee, Oct. 15, 1864, from Lieutenant Isaac Landis of the 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry to his parents, discussing the unit's recent forays into Georgia. In part: "...We now have 940 men in the field. Our aggregate strength now is 1310 enlisted men... We are on pretty heavy duty at this time. Half (or more) of the command are out scouting all the time. The Rebels have been advancing on Chattanooga. They captured Dalton and Resaca day before yesterday. [Union general William T.]Sherman is moving up on their rear. Co. D. Under command of Capt. M. O'Reilly were scouting in the direction of LaFayette [Georgia] a few days ago. On arriving at LaFayette he charged into the town and was not a little surprised to find the 4th Confederate and 6th Georgia Cavalry waiting for him. They immediately charged him front and flank, however he repelled them and held his ground until they tried to move on his rear when he ordered a retreat. At that instant they again charged his little band of 32 men. They kept up a running fight for four miles when they gave up the chase. Our loss was seven killed and 9 wounded or missing. The rebels had 4 or 5 killed - LaFayette does not appear to be a very healthy place for our Regiment. I think we will have to burn that place yet. The authorities at Chattanooga have a big scene on. I cannot tell what will be the military results of the next few days..." Landis signs at the conclusion. Shows original mailing folds, else very good to fine. Landis would serve in the 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry for almost the entire war, from October 1862 until July 1865, receiving wounds in Georgia in November of 1864.
