Description:

WEWELSBURG CASTLE CANDLE HOLDER PRESENTED TO HEINRICH HIMMLER
An important gift given to Heinrich Himmler by the chief architect of the reconstruction of the "sacred" castle at Wewelsburg, Hermann Bartels, an impressive relic of the castle kept for presentation to the Reichsfuhrer. Bartels' gift is a 7" tall, 6 1/2" x 6 1/2" block of hand-carved oak removed from the castle during its reconstruction and renovation which had commenced five years earlier. Three sides of the block bear the same ornately carved design reminiscent of runic symbols. At top is an opening for a candle with an engraved brass plate reading: "An Oak Block from Wewelsburg". An uncarved side of the block also bears a period engraved inset plaque: "The Patron of Wewelsburg Reichsfuhrer SS Heinrich Himmler [From] The Construction Supervision SS-Sturmbannfuhrer H. Bartels 7. Oct. 1938". Two sides of the presentation bear vertical cracks. From the odd shape of the brass plaque, made to fit an existing opening in the block, we speculate that this architectural remnant may have been an end point of a stairway bannister. Clearly, knowing the importance Himmler attached to Wewelsburg, this relic would have been cherished by him.
