WESTERN SINOLOGISTS AND ACADEMICS
Good group of eight signatures, all cut from letters, executed by nineteenth-century sinologists and academics working in China, includes: ARCHIMANDRITE PALLADIUS (1817-1878), head of the Russian Orthodox mission in China and designer of the Palladius system of transcribing Chinese into Cyrillic; ALBERT S. BICKMORE (1839-1914), American naturalist who co-founded the American Museum of Natural History, who did much work in the East Indies; STEPHEN W. BUSHELL (1844-1908), expert on Chinese ceramics; FREDERIC H. BALFOUR (1871-1908), translator of a number of classical Chinese texts, including the Tao Te Ching; JAMES LEGGE (1815-1897), Professor of Chinese at Oxford; EMIL BRETSCHNEIDER (1833-1901), Russian botanist and sinologist; ANATOLE BILLIQUIN (1837-1894), credited with introducing Western chemistry to China; and another Billiquin signature, likely executed by his wife. Some signatures are mounted on backing paper, or bear mounting remnants, else very good.
