Good group of two letters, one note, and one cut signature, all executed by nineteenth-century scholars of China and the Chinese language. Includes: STANISLAS JULIEN (1797-1873) Chair of Chinese at the Collège de France for over 40 years, the leading European scholar of China during the 19th century. A.L.S. in French, 1p. 8vo., Paris, May 18, 1866, to a Mr. Norris. Julien asks for permission to reprint a translation of a Chinese play originally translated by the Societe Asiatique of Loudres. The letter is executed on the letterhead of the Imperial College of France. Folds, mounting remnants and a biographical inscription in pencil on the verso, else very good. WITH: JEAN-BAPTISTE GROSIER (1743-1823) French Jesuit abbot, author of the General History of China, one of the first works to introduce Europeans to the cultural and political history of China. A.L.S. in French, 2pp. 8vo., Paris, Aug. 17, 1810, to a bookseller named Michaud. Grosier enquires if Michaud might want to include some articles on Chinese subjects from his own bibliography in Michaud's dictionary. Bears Michaud's address on the verso, with minor paper loss to the cover, folds, else very good. WITH: JULIUS KLAPROTH (1783-1835) German linguist, historian, ethnographer, author, orientalist and explorer, instrumental in turning East Asian Studies into a scientific discipline with critical methods. A.N.S. "Klaproth" in French, 1p. 12mo., [n.p.], Oct. 29, 1833, a receipt for proofs of several pages to be printed in a journal. With minor foxing, and with the lower right corner clipped. Also present is a clipping from an encyclopedia giving a short biography of Klaproth. WITH: THOMAS PERCY (1729-1811) Bishop of Dromore, translated the "Haoqiu zhuan", the first full publication in English of a Chinese novel. Signature cut from a letter "Thos. Percy", 2" x 7 1/2", [n.p., n.d.], with salutation. An ink notation in another hand denotes his ecclesiastical rank. Slight foxing, else very good. Four pieces.
