Description:

(WESTERN OUTLAWS) JOEL (JOE) A. FOWLER
JOEL A. FOWLER (1846-1884) Ruthless Old West con, cutthroat rustler, and cold-blooded killer. Some said he killed between 30-40 men. For a time, he lived in the San Mateo Mountains, near Concho Hills Guest Ranch, and died in Socorro. His first murder was a sheriff, at age 15. In 1881, Fowler shot 'Whisky Jim' Greathouse as he lay in bed asleep. He also killed Butcher Knife Bill and then burned his half-brother Pony Neal alive, just to make an impression on rustlers of the area. Stabbing a man to death in the street in Socorro, a crowd took Fowler from his cell and lynched him for the crime in January of 1884. They left the body hanging and 3,000 people turned out to view it. Unique manuscript D.S., 1p. legal folio, Williamson Co., Texas, Nov. 5, 1877, a pleading in his defense against a charge of 'Assault with intent to murder' one 'A. W. Grimes' in which Fowler asks that 'Robert Johnson' and 'Andrew Beson[?]' be subpoenaed to testify in his defense. Fowler signs at the bottom of the plea. At the bottom of the page is an (inverted) note: 'Carrying a six shooter'. Fine condition, and the only known Fowler signed piece in existence. SOLD WITH: the grand jury indictment of Fowler for the crime, Williamson Co., Tx., Aug. 6, 1876, describing the charge and signed by the jury foreman. Grimes survived his wounds to live another day...but not to many days. He would be killed some time later by the Sam Bass Gang.
