Description:

WEHRMACHT COSSACK CAVALRY CORPS FUR CAP
A very rare article of Third Reich headgear, a round white fleece visorless cap, fitted with a metal shell national eagle badge over a metal and wool national tricolor cockade, surrounded by a separate oak wreath badge. On of the pins securing the wreath is missing, allowing the maker's mark ‘P. S. & S.' to be seen on the reverse. The cap is fitted with a brown leather adjustable chinstrap with a steel roller buckle, secured with a pebbled steel button at each end. The cap is lined with rough, quilted cotton padding, and fitted with a wide brown leather sweatband with white stitching at the rear. The cap bears no markings. The exterior shows even yellowing overall, with faint brown stains to the crown and side, and with expected wear and sweat stains to the sweatband, otherwise in very good condition overall. Caps of this style, with this insignia, were commonly worn by Cossack cavalry forces who opted to join the Wehrmacht at the beginning of the Eastern Front campaign in 1941, largely in response to the suppression of Cossack culture under Communist rule. The initial units to be incorporated, the 1st and 2nd Cossack Cavalry Divisions, were primarily deployed as anti-partisan fighters. They were transferred to Waffen-SS command in 1944, although they retained their Wehrmacht uniforms and insignia.
