787. (JOHN TYLER) DANIEL WEBSTER (1782-1852) American lawyer and statesman who verbally jousted with Calhoun in the Senate and later supported Clay's compromise measures on slavery. Partly-printed D.S. as Secretary of State, 1p. folio parchment, Washington, Apr. 24, 1841, a scallop-top ship's paper issued to the "Ship Gratitude of New Bedford", a vessel of 330 tons with a crew of 28 men, boldly signed by Webster at bottom. A vandal years ago removed President John Tyler's signature from the document, its place now backed with a similar piece of parchment. $150-200
