Description:

(GEORGE WASHINGTON) (1732 - 1799) First President of the United States and commander of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. A contemporary true copy of a letter from Washington to Comfort Sands, 1p. 4to., "Head Quarters, Newburgh ", May 1, 1782 to "Comfort Sands Esq. & Compy ". Washington instructs Sands to "issue Provisions to the People Employed in the Department of the Quarter Master General and Commissary of Military Stores, upon the return of the Principals of those Departments now with the Army until Notice of the new System of Issues can be given by them to the Quarter Mater General and Commissary of Military Stores, and their Directions transmitted to the Contractors agreeably to the System. " Interestingly, the person who produced this true copy took a bold attempt at mimicking Washington's signature with not too terrible a result! It does confirm that the writer was copying from Washington's original. Lightly toned, tear at bottom repaired on verso, otherwise very good. $400-600
