Description:

WARD HILL LAMON
(1828-1893) Personal friend and self-appointed bodyguard of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln. Served as Marshal for the city of Washington and chief of protocol at White House events. He and Lincoln had a working law partnership before Lamon became prosecuting attorney in 1856. He was also with President-elect Lincoln when he carefully entered Washington in February 1861 to avoid possible violence in Baltimore, and was famously absent the night Lincoln was assassinated at Ford's Theatre on April 14, 1865. Very rare manuscript D.S., 4pp. legal folio, Washington, D.C., April 22, 1865 – the day Lincoln's funeral train departed Baltimore – an indenture in which Lamon sells several plots of land seized in his capacity as U.S. Marshal at public auction to a Theodore Wheeler. Lamon signs at the conclusion in black ink, with his title added in another hand, and with a notary signing below. An approx. 2.75 x 2.5 in. square of paper has been cut out of the final page of the document at the bottom edge, with folds and slight toning, otherwise in very good to fine condition overall. Sold with a second manuscript document, 1p. legal folio, Washington, D.C., April 22, 1865, an attestation from the above-mentioned notary, affirming that Lamon executed the above-mentioned deed in his presence. A newspaper clipping advertising the auction selling the parcels of land is tabbed to the sheet below. Two pieces.
