Description:

ABRAHAM LINCOLN
(1809-1865) Sixteenth President of the United States who led the Union through the Civil War and emancipated the slaves, assassinated. Partly-printed D.S. ‘Abraham Lincoln' as President, 1p. folio parchment, Washington, Aug. 25, 1864, the promotion of Harry C. Cushing to Brevet Captain for his gallantry displayed at Chickamauga the previous year. The commission is sold with a lock of approx. ten hairs taken from Lincoln's head immediately after his shooting at Ford's Theater by Dr. Charles Leale, the first physician to arrive at the President's side. This lock, part of a larger mass of blood-stained hair, was removed by Leale in an effort to better access Lincoln's mortal head wound. The hair is accompanied by copies of very solid provenance, and other such locks have been sold in the past and purchased with complete confidence. Both the hair and the document are elaborately matted and framed with a repro photo of Lincoln and his death bed scene, all set into a gilt wood frame with a volume of provenance for the lock of hair. IMPORTANT: The Lincoln signed document is EXTREMELY FADED to the point where Lincoln's signature is nearly invisible, and a good deal of the engrossment is also very difficult to discern. The document is, however, completely authentic but not subject to return due to condition. Of course, a skilled restorer could enhance the text and signature if so desired. Estimated accordingly.
