Description:

WAR OF 1812
Interesting lot of four periodicals from 1812-1815 devoted to events leading up to and during America's second war of independence, includes: a scarce copy of the British newspaper Bell's Weekly Messenger, 8pp., Jan. 26, 1812, announcing "WAR WITH ENGLAND RECOMMENDED BY THE AMERICAN HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES"; three editions of THE WEEKLY REGISTER, Baltimore, 16pp., July 25, 1812, containing much detailed news on the impressment of American sailors and Indian hostilities; an exceptional account of the attack upon Baltimore, a British perspective, Dec. 8, 1814, with a detailed listing of all casualties and loss of property. Also in this issue appears a rarely-seen printed proclamation by Maj. Gen. Andrew Jackson, Headquarters, 7th Military District, calling for the free colored inhabitants of Louisiana to pick up arms in defense of America, in part "….you will be paid the same bounty in money and lands, now received by white soldiers ($124 in money, and 160 acres of land). You will not, by being associated with white men in the same corps, be exposed to improper comparisons or unjust sarcasm….". Additional news describes the exploits of the battleship Wasp, including battle accounts and a listing of captured British vessels. The last issue, Jan. 28, 1815, provides intelligence reports leading up to the Battle of New Orleans, with dispatches by Generals Jackson, Butler and Commodore Patterson. Butler addresses the "men of color" who have fought so gallantly in Louisiana. From New York comes news that the "rotting" ship Hornet went to sea. Much more excellent content! Very good condition with all pages still intact and uniformly toned.
