WALTER MEDHURST
(1822-1885) British consul to China, active in the treaty ports of Fuzhou, Hangzhou, Hankou, and Shanghai. A prominent advocate of gunboat diplomacy. Signed book, "The Foreigner in Far Cathay", by W.H. Medhurst (London: Edward Stanford), 1872, 192pp. 8vo., a volume intended to educate the English populace on a number of facets of Chinese culture, with special attention given to the status and treatment of foreign visitors, residents, and missionaries. Inscribed in pencil on the half-title: "From Uncle Walter, W.H. Medhurst". Bound in green cloth boards with gilt title and decoration. Minor wear and bumping to the covers, and bearing an ex libris bookplate on the front pastedown, else very good.
