Description:

CONTRACT FOR THE SALE OF TEA
Partially-printed D.S., 1p. 4to., New York, Aug. 16, 1790, billing shipowners THOMAS RANDALL (1723-1797) and JOHN PINTARD (1759-1844) for the sum of $5,765.10, in exchange for 562 chests of souchong and hyson tea imported from China, which have been reloaded onto the brigantine ELIZA CUTTER for further export. Signed at the bottom by two individuals named J. Lowell and Jonathan Warren as witnesses, who are not mentioned in the text. The bottom-right corner of the bill, which once bore the signatures of Randall and Pintard, has been cut out, presumably when the debt was paid by the two men. Randall and Pintard were both important figures in the China trade; Randall in particular was the business agent for the ship EMPRESS OF CHINA, the first American merchant vessel to visit China in 1784-85, transporting the first American envoy to Canton. Some paper loss at the upper left corner, where a wax seal has been removed, not affecting the text, and with a small tear at the bottom, affecting the signature of Warren, else very good.
