Description:

WALTER HINTON'S NC-4 FLOWN MATCHSAFE
WALTER HINTON (1888-1981) Early American aviator who founded the Aviation institute of U.S.A., most famous for completing the first ever transatlantic flight in 1919, nine years before Charles Lindbergh. A close friend of the Wright Brothers. A relic from Hinton's famous flight aboard the NC-4, the first plane to traverse the Atlantic, landing in Lisbon on May 27, 1919, Hinton's gold match safe purported to have been carried by him aboard that flight. The gold-tone match safe measures 1.75 x 2.25 in. with a ribbed hinged cover with green and black stripes. It is engraved with the monogram: 'JPM' and is contained within a burgundy felt-lined box and leather-covered gilt box with gold embossed title: 'Walter Hinton Gold Match Box Carried on NC-4 Flight'. No other written provenance has surfaced. We can state that this item was included in a collection of Hinton's personal awards and memorabilia, including his photo albums, various awards, a section of the NC-4 wing, etc., much of which he donated to his friend, Peter C. Carlson. Sold with a copy of a letter from Hinton to Carlson mentioning his gifting other items, 1978. Due to lack of provenance, estimated accordingly and sold as is.
