Description:

WALTER HINTON'S NAVY PILOT'S WINGS
WALTER HINTON (1888-1981) A pioneering American aviator, Hinton is most famous for having completed, with fellow pilot Albert C. Read, the first transatlantic flight in May, 1919 - nine years before Charles Lindbergh. Hinton also made the first flight from North America to South America, and was president and founder of the Aviation Institute of U.S.A. An important historic relic, Hinton's U.S. Navy pilot's wings, named to him and very possibly worn by Hinton during his famous flight. The sterling silver wings, 2.75 in. long, are period-engraved on the reverse: 'LT. W. HINTON 1919' and stamped 'STERLING'. As Hinton's flight was in May, 1919, it's entirely possible these wings crossed the Atlantic pinned to Hinton's chest. From a collection originally owned by Peter C. Carlson, a close friend of Hinton and to whom he dedicated a section of the NC-4 wing fabric offered elsewhere in this sale.
