Description:

WALTER HINTON'S AERO CLUB OF AMERICA MEDAL
WALTER HINTON (1888-1981) Early American aviator who founded the Aviation institute of U.S.A., most famous for completing the first ever transatlantic flight in 1919, nine years before Charles Lindbergh. Close friend of the Wright brothers. A fine historic relic, Hinton's Aero Club of America engraved presentation medal, given to him in honor of his famous trans-Atlantic flight. The two-piece brass medal includes a hefty, round bronze lower disc, 1.25 in. dia., which displays an albatross in flight over the earth and 'AERO CLUB OF AMERICA' in relief. The reverse is engraved: 'W. K. Hinton Pilot NC-4 Commemorating Trans Atlantic Flight May 8th to 31st 1919'. This disc is accompanied by the upper part of the medal, an ornate bronze piece reading in relief: 'Aviation Medal of Merit'. These two pieces were once joined by a red ribbon, of which only a small segment remains. Accompanied by a 1978 D.S. on Hinton's letterhead, notarized and signed, in which Hinton gifts the medal to a friend. A fine relic.
