Description:

WALTER H. TAYLOR
(1838-1916) Virginia soldier, lawyer, and politician who fought as an officer with the Confederacy, rising to Robert E. Lee's aide-de-camp. Taylor wrote several best-sellers of his war recollections. Set of two post-war A.L.S.'s to Virginia Gov. James L. Kemper, in which Taylor gives his recommendations for the post of flour inspector. The first A.L.S., 5pp. 8vo., Norfolk, June 12, 1877, outlines the potential candidates and discusses their attributes and flaws; the second A.L.S., 2pp. 8vo., Norfolk, June 19, 1877, firmly backs a Mr. Walker for the post. Both boldly signed, "W H Taylor". Central fold with moderate toning at bottom margin and water staining at top, slightly affecting signatures.
