Description:

HENRY G. THOMAS
(1837-1898) Union brigadier general, the first regular army officer to accept command of colored troops, fought at the Wilderness, Petersburg, Spotsylvania, and at the Mine Explosion, later an Indian fighter. A.L.S. approving proposed expenditures, penned at the conclusion of a letter to him by Colorado College President EDWARD B. TENNEY on a beautifully illustrated letterhead, 2pp. 4to, Colorado Springs, Feb. 23, 1882, regarding upkeep of the college grounds. Tenney served as Colorado College's second president from 1876-1884, publishing the very successful pamphlet The New West, but ultimately resigned for steering the school into dire financial straits. The letterhead bears a superb print lithograph of Colorado Springs, showing a neatly laid-out town nestled underneath the imposing Rocky Mountains. Boldly signed by both Tenney and Thomas. Minor folds with tear repaired on verso slightly affecting the print, else very good.
