Description:

WALT WHITMAN
(1819 - 1892) American poet whose volume of verse Leaves of Grass was initially rejected by the public and cost him his job in the federal government. It was only in his later years that his genius became recognized worldwide. Rare S.P., an original albumen cabinet image 4" x 6 1/2" sepia, affixed to a slightly larger sheet bearing printed legend: "Photo'd from life, Sept. '72, Brooklyn, N.Y. by G. F. E. Pearsall Fulton St...". Boldly signed at lower right: "Walt Whitman born May 31, 1819". Moderate glue stains to edges intrude a slight bit on signature, otherwise very good condition.
