Description:

EMIL LUDWIG'S 50TH BIRTHDAY ALBUM
EMIL LUDWIG (1881-1948) German author, best known for his biographies including Goethe, Bismarck, and Mussolini. His blend of historical fact and fiction mixed with psychological analysis proved very popular, but was considered extremely dangerous by Joseph Goebbels who mentioned Ludwig in his journal. A very interesting piece, a felt-bound 4to. album fashioned for his 50th birthday in 1931. The album, consisting of 34 leaves includes many luminaries of the early part of the twentieth century, many of whom add lengthy inscriptions and includes THOMAS A. EDISON, GEORGE BERNARD SHAW (who quips: "I really must refuse to congratulate you on your 50th birthday...Why shouldn't you have a...sixtieth? I have had a 70th myself and have every intention of having an 80th if I can get one. But I shall keep it a secret"), H. G. WELLS, BRUNO WALTER, and a beautiful watercolor painting by the artist RICO LEBRUN (1900-1965) signed "RICO". Other signatures include the poet RICHARD DEHMEL (1863-1920), the mineralogist, VICTOR GOLDSCHMIDT, the philosopher, ELIZABETH GOGUEL de LABROUSSE (1914-2000), physician ERNST LAQUEUR (1880-1947), author MAX MEYERHOF (1874-1945), German foreign service officer (and later C.I.A. consultant). With GERHART HAUPTMANN, German dramatist and winner of the 1942 Nobel Prize in literature, GUSTAV HILGER, Scottish surgeon and anatomist ARTHUR KEITH (1866-1955), OTTO LECHER, Austrian judge and politician, JAN MASARYK (1886-1948), Czech diplomat, ALFRED SACHS (1907-1990), German painter, PAUL GRAF ZOLF METTERNICH, the German baritone, LUDWIG WULLNER, co-author of the Briand-Kellogg Pact of 1928, ARI BRIAND, the Jewish authority on GoetheJULIUS LOEB, German musician, ERNST HAUPTMANN, discoverer Troy,SOPHIE SCHLIEMANN, and leftwing German Jewish playwrightERNST TOLLER, and many others.
