701. VIRGINIA MANUSCRIPT CAVALRY REGULATIONS. JOHN AMBLER (1762-1830) Virginia lawyer, officer in the Virginia Militia and Jamestown and Williamsburg planter. D.S. 3pp. 4to, [Virginia], Nov. 28, 1801 being regulations governing the "Troop of Horse". In part: "...The Subscribers having enlisted ourselves to serve as troopers in the Troop of Horse, at present Commanded by Capt. John Ambler, and being convinced of the necessity of observing certain other regulations, for the ordering and disciplining the said Troops, independent of the general regulations established by Law: do hereby severally agree to observe and fulfill the following..." There follows five articles regulating the militia, including meeting days, fines for non-attendance, uniforms, expected behavior, etc. A 2" x 1" v-shaped piece missing from the fold, with loss of just a few words, although most can be determined, fold split and an old tape repair on the verso of the second leaf, still good. Ambler's cousin married Chief Justice John Marshall in Ambler's house. $200-300
