Description:

VIRGIL EARP AND THE TOMBSTONE VOLUNTEER HOOK & LADDER CO.
(VIRGIL EARP) TOMBSTONE VOLUNTEER HOOK & LADDER COMPANY. Excessively rare photograph, 6 1/2" x 9 1/2" sepia, [Tombstone, Az., 1881], showing the 15 members of the Tombstone Volunteer Hook and Ladder Company, including Virgil Earp (second from left), all in full turnout gear. Mounted to an 8 1/2" x 11 3/4" board. The Tombstone General and Business Directory 1883-1884, p. 124, lists Hook and Ladder Co. officers as: "Geo. W. Swain, (Police Judge), President; A. J. Ritter, Vice President; Fred Dodge, Secretary; E. T. Kearney, Treasurer; Dan McCann, Foreman; W. E. McCready, 1st Assistant; Wm. Baron, 2nd Assistant.", all of whom are likely present in this image. Virgil Earp left Tombstone on March 20, 1882, and Wyatt, Doc Holliday, and several others accompanied him to Tucson. As Virgil boarded the train to California, Wyatt and the others gunned-down Frank Stilwell. Image with slight soiling and rubbing; perimeter of mount board worn, otherwise an extraordinarily rare image!
