Description:

Excellent display collecting the Vietnam War medals and insignia of Spc. Alfred L. Span of the 101st Airborne Division, including his Purple Heart and Bronze Star with "V" device and matching ribbon bars; his Parachutist Badge and cloth patch; two ribbon bars featuring five additional awards; his Combat Infantryman Badge; his Expert Marksmanship Badge for the machine gun and rifle, and Sharpshooter Badge for the pistol; his olive-drab webbing uniform name tag; an embroidered Airborne/Glider uniform patch; thirteen brass uniform buttons of varying sizes; and three grenade safety pins. The group is mounted on a section of wool bunting American flag within a 36 ¾" x 18" display case, along with Span's retirement certificate from the U.S. Army, dated May 1, 1971, as well as a newspaper clipping describing the circumstance under which Span received his Purple Heart and Bronze Star: after receiving wounds in several other engagements, he was taking part in a "search and destroy" mission outside of Phu Bai, when his column was surprised from behind by several NVA soldiers. After killing one, he was shot through his right side and struck in the head by a piece of shrapnel. He lay where he fell for over five hours until a medic could reach him, and underwent surgery to remove more than a foot of colon.
