VERMONT HUGH HUGHES Deputy Quartermaster for New York State. Fine content war date A.L.S., 3pp. legal folio, Fishkill, Mar. 10, 1782 to Major Nicholas Quakenbush, Deputy Assistant Quartermaster at Albany concerning supply issues and the recent decision by Congress not to admit Vermont as a state into the Union. He begins discussing issues of supply: "...I think the Q M General perfectly right in putting a stop to such unreasonable Demands as are made on his Department from all Quarters. — You must not furnish a single Batteau[x] to Colonel Duer or his order, nor any other of the Contractors. They are all returned to the Commander-in-Chief, and must not be dispos'd of without his order, the order of the QMG. or General Heath...you'll please to observe- this you will also acquaint Capt. Glen with from me, to prevent the Destruction of what costs the publick [sic] such vast sums annually. — The Contractors are private Gentlemen, and have no Right to a single Article of publick Property, unless it be stores to issue, in, which is furnished them for the Recommendation of the Troops". He then comes to the subject of Vermont, a long-time source of dispute between New York and New Hampshire who both claimed the territory as their own: "...You will have heard perhaps, before this reaches you, that Vermont is no more. Congress have decided it at last. Let me hear how it operates on them & the Land Jobbers now & then — Am I not as well off as those that have been grafting whole Townships.— I know I have been laughed at for a Fool, but that gives me no pain, which the Fate of Vermont will give many...".
