Description:

REVOLUTIONARY WAR QUARTERMASTER'S DEPARTMENT A fascinating war date manuscript document, 1p. legal folio, Albany, Oct. 24, 1781 entitled "A Return of Persons employed in the Quarter Master Generals Department at Albany 24 October 1781" listing the entire compliment of personnel of the department headed by Major Nicholas Quackenbush, Assistant Deputy Quartermaster. A rare look at the composition of a typical quartermaster's staff which included three clerks, a "Waggon Conductor", eight "Waggoners & Hostlers", an express rider, two carpenters and their superintendent, four blacksmiths and their supervisor, eight "Batteaumen " and their captain, a superintendent of the ferry and three ferrymen. A superb piece for research into the inner workings of one of the most critical components of the Continental Army, written less than a week following the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown. A few toned spots, light foxing, margins slightly irregular, otherwise very good. $300-500
