Description:

USS SAN JACINTO ACTION REPORTS
Superb war-dated after action report: Action Report of USS SAN JACINTO 14 TO 22 MARCH 1945 Action Against Kyushu and Honshu, Japanese Empire and Enemy Air Attacks", about 40pp. 4to., [n.p., but undoubtedly prepared in the theater of war, end of March, 1945]. The Independence-class light aircraft carrier from which future President George H. W. Bush had flown and was shot-down was conducting operations off Kyushu, Japan. She witnessed the conflagration on the USS FRANKLIN and on 19 March 1945 narrowly escaped destruction herself when a kamikaze barely missed her. This confidential report, one of 11 copies, describes efforts to be taken to counter the Ohka flying bomb, provides a 10pp. chronology and narrative of events including the bombing of land targets, air engagements, and the bombing the FRANKLIN, shows the task force's course, and has 18 original photographs. The photos depict the FRANKLIN and the ENTERPRISE in flames, bombs falling on land targets, carriers on fire in Kobe harbor, images from gun cameras showing kamikaze aircraft in flames, etc. Detailed anti-aircraft reports are included which also bear sketches of vessels and the paths of attacking aircraft, with additional reports of battle damage, air operations, enemy damage assessments, CIC report, weather, and recommendations. A fascinating report from a carrier in the thick of the battle.
