Description:

USS MACEDONIAN AND THE "OPENING" OF JAPAN
Manuscript document (unsigned) entitled "Abstract Cruise of the U.S.S. Macedonian, bearing the broad Pendent of Com. Joel Abbot, in the years 1853, ./54, ./55 & ./56," 2pp, folio, [n.p., n.d.], very possibly a contemporary account of the historic travels of this vessel. The chronology sets forth such information as "Sailed from... Arrived at... Distanced Sailed..." and so on for the years 1853-56. One of the places visited by the ship was Yokohama on Feb. 24, 1854. In 1852 the U.S.S. Macedonian docked at the Brooklyn Navy Yard to be converted to a sloop-of-war for the expedition to Japan, 1852 to 1854. Assigned to the East India Squadron under Commodore Matthew Perry, the vessel, with Captain Joel Abbot in command, was one of the six American ships arrayed off Uraga, Japan, on February 13, 1854 during Perry's second visit to negotiate the opening of Japan to foreign trade. The Convention of Kanagawa, signed at Yokohama on March 31, 1854, was a distinct naval victory in the diplomatic field. Minor white spots on the light blue paper, otherwise very good condition.
