Description:

UNITED STATES MODEL 1902 ARMY OFFICER''S SWORD WITH CUSTOM DECORATION
Fine U.S. Model 1902 Army Officer''s sword, 31 3/4" blade, 37 1/2" overall, with an elaborate nickel silver basket-style hand guard decorated with a scrolled floral motif. The pommel is in the shape of a bird''s head with red semi-precious stones inset at the eyes, and with the feather pattern continuing on the backstrap. The grip is of black bakelite over wood, and features the knurled finger ridges indicative of this model. When disassembled, the tang shows the stamped initials "C. E.", likely indicating the German manufacturer Carl Eickhorn, as well as several part numbers. The blade itself is decorated with a gold-washed etched pattern showing a Great Seal on the obverse and the initials "U.S." on the reverse, with additional floral and geometric embellishments, martial themes, and a space for a presentation inscription, left blank on this example. The silver elements of the hilt show some tarnish, with an approx. 1/2" wide band of oxidation visible on the blade about 14" from the hilt. The sword is housed in a 33" plated steel scabbard, with two suspension rings affixed to nickel silver sleeves affixed to the scabbard with screws. These sleeves are decorated with elaborate floral pattern on the obverse side, with a simpler design on the reverse where the scabbard would wear against the wearer''s body. The drag is also of nickel silver, and is similarly decorated. The silver elements again show some tarnish, with small scattered spots of oxidation to the steel and one minute ding visible on the reverse, else very good. A much more elaborate version of this model of sword than usually seen.
