Description:

MODEL 1902 OFFICER''S SWORD OF HENRY PARRY, 14TH NEW YORK NATIONAL GUARD REGIMENT
A fine example of a U.S. Model 1902 Officer''s Sword, 29 1/2" blade, 35 1/4" overall, owned by Capt. Henry Parry of the 14th Infantry Regiment of the New York National Guard. The sword features a basket-style nickel hand guard, pommel and back strap, with a grip of dark horn featuring knurled finger ridges. The handguard shows some tarnish and verdigris, with cracks visible to the horn grip nearest the blade. The mirror-finish blade itself is finely entched with patriotic and floral motifs, including an American eagle, the initials "U.S", several "U.S."-marked flags, a crossed cannon and fasces with a shield at center, and more. The reverse ricasso is etched with the company name "Forkes & Baldwin New York NY", likely the engraver. The blade shows slight oxidation at the ricasso and the bottom portion of the engraving, but is otherwise in very good condition with only the faintest of run marks visible. The original 18" brown leather sword knot is present but not attached to the hilt, while a broken segment of brown strap is attached to the hand guard with a brass swivel clip, likely a fragment of the scabbard hanger. The blade is housed in a 30 1/2" plated steel scabbard with two suspension rings, showing some oxidation overall but completely straight, with no dents or distortion. Also present with the sword are a pair of D.S.''s, each 1p. oblong 4to, certificates appointing Parry a Corporal and then a Sergeant in the 14th Infantry Regiment, dated June 25, 1906, and Dec. 2, 1907 respectively. The collection is rounded out by a collection of 36 b/w photos, most 3 1/2" x 5" and smaller, all but three mounted in loosely-bound album pages. The bulk of the photographs depict the 14th Infantry in training at Peekskill, New York, demonstrating riflery, horse-mounted maneuvers, artillery, and more. Two of the photos depict Parry in uniform, with the sword presented here clearly visible at his side. A fine collection.
