Lot of five Union soldiers' letters featuring patriotic markings or letterhead, includes: A.L.S. from David Gasverich, Co. H., 16th PA Cavalry, to his wife, 4pp. 8vo., Annapolis, MD, March 22, 1863, on letterhead with a vignette of Miss Liberty holding an American flag with caption"First My God, Next My Country and My Family...Let Traitors see, Our blood shall flow for liberty", in part:"...I would dare to not go to Harrisburg for they would take me up and send me back...", some ink smudging; A.L.S. from"Noah" to his mother, 3pp. 8vo.,"Head-quarters Company K, Camp Relay", Jan. 24, 1863, on 138th PA Vols. letter sheet featuring a flying Miss Liberty bearing a sheaf of wheat and the caption"Onward to Victory", in part:"...there is some of the drafted men seen just hard times already...", unused quarter of the letter has been removed, vertical fold has been archivally repaired; A.L.S. from"Dave", Co. G, 5th MI Cavalry, to a friend Bell, 2pp. 8vo., Detroit, Sept. 22, 1862, on tricolor letterhead with flags, stars, a banner draped-drum, an open winged eagle and the words"THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER MUST BE UPHELD", in part:"I am standing guard today...I will keep you posted...so long as providence sees fit to spare so unworthy a soldier..."; an A.L.S. from Peter F. Benson, Co. G, 18th MA. Volunteers, to his brother, on letterhead with a tricolor star surrounding a flag and the word"UNION", in part:"...Yes, here I am an old Virginie in the land of the enemies enjoying the life of a soldier but the life of a soldier is no lazy life...Perhaps this will be my last letter but I cannot tell. The Good one knows if my life is spared..."; and an A.L.S. from farmer Joseph Lehman to his son, Union soldier John Lehman, 3pp. 8vo., [n.p.], Dec. 24, 1862, on letterhead featuring a red-and-blue vignette with a starred shield and the words"THE UNION & CONSTITUTION", in part:"...I wish the cursed war was ended that you soldiers can come home to your deer families & parents & friends again..." Except where noted, very good condition. Should be seen. Sold with a torn patriotic envelope and a limited edition print titled"GENERAL SHERMAN'S WAGON-TRAIN PASSING THROUGH RESACA, GA, AT NIGHT", no. 61/500, created 2001.
