Union Soldiers Correspondence A fine lot of 19 letters of Union soldier Henry Aiken, 4th Mass Artillery (Butler's Brigade under command of Benjamin Butler The letters 51 pages in all cover the period June 15 1862 to Sep. 26 1864 concerning his service in New Orleans and Louisiana Some excerpts: the rebels came right in again they dont seems to make any stand in one action at Baton Rouge they lost one man and several wounded a rebel deserter enlisted with us missing at role call and he has not been seen since Some think he came as a spy we have three company of 'nigger soldiers here they haven t been tested yet I guess they look like niggers yet. white soldiers are at the level of the black slave at Port Hudson we took 1, 500 prisoners and one battery General Grant is going to have command of the Mississippi He also mentions action at Morganza, but generally the letters are of camp life describing drunkenness, befriending freed slaves etc
