UNION SOLDIER WITNESSES STONEWALL RIDE AND HARPERS FERRY SURRENDER
Fine content Union soldier's letter, 8pp. 8vo., Chicago, Oct. 13, 1862 in which Jonathan Yeckley of the 126th N.Y. [POW Harpers Ferry 9/15/62, WIA Gettysburg 7/2/63] writes a lady friend discussing the debacle at Harper's Ferry. In part: "…I have thought long & bitterly of that surrender at Harper's Ferry…I lay there in the trench that Monday morning surrounded by brave me, the shells hissing all the time, but no one spoke of surrender, but, I often heard, 'I wish they would lead us out to charge that battery'. And when an officer rode along with a white flag more than one strong man wept…We were saved the humiliation of marching before the rebel. We stacked our arms went off and left them…the next day the rebels went up to get them. Resistance would have been useless as our strong places had been given up & Jackson was around us with sixty thousand men & a quantity of artillery…Will McMahon I am told is mortally wounded…He was color bearer of the twenty-seventh…I did not gather any relics at the Ferry…had no heart to do so…It was from subordinate positions that the present rebel demigods were raised. Jackson, Lee, Longstreet and Hill are worshipped by their men. I saw the former [Jackson]gallop along the front of his men as he went to awful fight at Sharpsburg. He was rec'd with waving hats and flags and one continued cheer. Said a rebel that stood by my side 'Just see the glorious old Fellow gallop bareheaded before his men'…". Fine.
